Absolutely! Space is a multidisciplinary field. We need people with artistic minds, number crunching brains, communication skills and much more! At Space Concordia, there are people working on technical projects, science, media, outreach, finance, documentation, sponsorship, artwork, merchandise, purchases, management… The list goes on!
YES. Many of our members start off as first year students, just eager to learn. No one is born with the ability to design satellites, rockets and robots - we all have to all start somewhere! We have plenty of members ready to help you out; there is always something you can work on. Projects such as ours so demand a lot of commitment, and new students should be aware of that going in.
It is important to understand that the learning curve at Space Concordia can be very high. That comes from our team's constant push to go above & beyond - so catching new members up to speed can sometimes be a challenge. As a new member, you're expected to use the resources provided to you to make yourself as ready for your project as possible. When you are assigned a task or deliverable, it is your responsibility to get that done, and do so on time. You might have a lot of questions, and that's normal! It's YOUR responsibility to ask those questions; ask other members and ask resources like the books in the lab, or internet sources. We love answering questions about our work and helping new people learn about space. Once you get a good feel for SC, it'll be your turn to answer questions and help our new members!
Feeling like a part of a big group can be really difficult, especially if existing members already have strong ties and similar social interests that you may or may not share. Furthermore, team leads are just students too - sometimes they can fall behind and forget to assign you a new task. Just ask how you can help! The best thing you can do is ask questions. There is ALWAYS something to do - if not in your team right now, ask around elsewhere and see if you can lend a hand. An active member of Space Concordia is never turned away. If you're really struggling, or if there's a question you have that isn't answered on this page, you can always talk to your division's lead or internal team, or the general society VP Internal. They are there to help you!
We depend on people like you to keep flying! Space Concordia has a long history of partnership within and without the Canadian aerospace industry. Space Concordia is a student society at Concordia University that throws its members at challenging space and aerospace projects, to yield awesome results. We win awards at national and international competitions, we showcase our school, but most importantly: Space Concordia teaches and trains excellent young scientists and engineers through hands-on work and an attitude of persistence and collaboration.
